Reading for Jan. 15, 2013

Author: Irenaeus

Reading: Against Heresies, bk. 1 ch. 10–14

Pages: ANF 1:330–338

  1. I wonder what Irenaeus means by “advents” in the plural in sec 1 of ch 10? Is he simply referring to Jesus’ birth and his future return, or to something else?

  2. I’ve always understood him to mean Jesus’ birth and second coming. There is a variant reading for ‘advent’ that the Ancient Christian Writers translation opts for, thus referring only to the first. Apparently, the choice depends on whether you think Irenaeus means just the one (‘advent’) or the two (‘advents’).
